Plein Air Vista Hermosa Natural Park

Today I painted with the Weekend Warrior Painters at their 100th Painting Session at Vista Hermosa Natural Park in Los Angeles. The park is hidden north of downtown Los Angeles with great views of the city. It was overcast today but warm.

‘Plane’ Air Painting in Paso Robles, California

I began searching for a place to paint, hopefully with some of the gorgeous farmland as a backdrop. I wandered down a strip of road flanked on both sides by an automotive swap meet and open fields. Capping off the swap meet in the middle of the road were parked two planes from the museum. I walked around and found a the angle I wanted and set up the easel. As I painted, many people came by to see what I was doing, and some even took photos! It was very breezy that day and I had to clamp down the canvas to keep it from flying away. I ended up with a sunburn and the painting posted here.

Now I see why many painters are inspired by the rolling hills and patches of farmland in Central California.

My painting wins a ribbon!

I was pleasantly surprised that my entry in the BAA Spring Show won a ribbon for second place in the landscape division. The painting is “Brace Canyon – Yellow.” I originally was going to enter a painting of my cat, but the BAA just had a show called “Feathers and Whiskers” so I figured maybe they had seen enough cats. This painting to me was always a good example of when the palette knife works the best. I should do more…

Thank you to everyone at the Burbank Art Association who helped put on the show!
