Santa Monica Beach Plein Air Painting

Painting by Oscar Will of Santa Monica beach sun setting

The Santa Monica Beach Pier was very crowded this Sunday – the result of a confluence of events: St. Patrick’s Day, Spring Break, mid 80s Fahrenheit inland, and the first weekend in a while it didn’t rain.

It didn’t stop me from getting in a quick Plein air painting of the beach crowds waiting for the sunset.

Los Angeles State Historic Park

I did this painting this week en plein air of Los Angels State Historic Park near the Chinatown area of Los Angeles. The light of the day was waning into a yellow wash by the time I was applying the main colors, so I went with it.

The short story of this park is that this stretch of land by railroad tracks was going to be made into a row of warehouses but the community rallied together to show its best use was for a modern park. There are great stretches of green grass, many exhibits, and a lot of modern design with wood and stone.

This bridge curves and ends in a view of downtown Los Angeles.

St. Leon Armenian Church Finished Painting

Acrylic cityscape painting of church by Oscar Will

I made a lot of finishing touches on my painting from the weekend. I tidied up the right side, added a wash to the left side, and finished the glass blocks towards the bottom. A big change was the alcove with the cross over it in the center. In the original, I didn’t have enough room for the cross, so I repainted the whole section. I thought halfway through that I ruined it, but it came out fine, I think.

St. Leon Armenian Church

Evening Plein air painting with the Weekend Warrior Painters at St. Leon Armenian Church in Burbank, CA. Thank you to the pastor for letting our group paint until 8PM. I am still working on my Cloisonnism painting technique, I have some final details to do but as it is here it’s mostly finished. I will post the final painting.
