Pacific Asian Museum Plein Air

Saturday I was painting in Pasadena with the Weekend Warrior Painters at the Pacific Asian Museum. I layered a few things to create an interesting composition, the building across the street, a parking pass box, and a few cars.

Olive Recreation Center New Version

This is now much lighter than the original version. I still see a part that is the wrong color but this is close enough for now.

Olive Recreation Center Plein Air First Draft

Last Sunday I painted the baseball fields at Olive Recreation Center in Burbank, California. It was hot, in the nineties, and I painted from under a sycamore tree. I tried to capture the hanging branches in the painting but it’s hard to capture the depth in this flat style of painting. I’m still working on it, and I decided to post this since the final result so far is going to be noticeably different. Lighter sky, leaves more defined lines.

Venice, California Canals

updated version of acrylic impressionism abstract painting of Venice Canals Los Angeles by Oscar Will Willtopaint.com

It was nice to be near the beach and Plein air Painting again. I joined the Weekend Warrior Painters in Venice, California in the Venice Canals. The walkways were narrow and there were a lot of tourists taking pictures on the bridges. A few took pictures of me painting!

I updated this post with the final version.

Oxnard Beach Plein Air Painting

Last weekend I was at Oxnard Beach and brought along my painting gear. The best view was down where the surf was coming in, so I set up the easel and painted quickly as the waves licked my feet. I like how the wave frames the photo of the painting.

Descanso Gardens Plein Air Painting

Last weekend I painted with the Weekend Warriors in Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, CA. Did the heat scare everyone away or were we spread out all over? I only saw a few others painting. I was very ambitious because I took a 16″ x 20″ canvas to paint on and I’d never painted that large since using Cloisonnist techniques. I think it turned out good.

Stoney Point Park Plein Air

I met the Weekend Warrior Painters at Stoney Point Park in Chatsworth, CA. It was very hot that morning but I preservered and found a spot to paint under an oak tree. Looking south I could see the tall sandstone rocks and a dusty trail.

St. Leon Armenian Church Finished Painting

I made a lot of finishing touches on my painting from the weekend. I tidied up the right side, added a wash to the left side, and finished the glass blocks towards the bottom. A big change was the alcove with the cross over it in the center. In the original, I didn’t have enough room for the cross, so I repainted the whole section. I thought halfway through that I ruined it, but it came out fine, I think.

St. Leon Armenian Church

Evening Plein air painting with the Weekend Warrior Painters at St. Leon Armenian Church in Burbank, CA. Thank you to the pastor for letting our group paint until 8PM. I am still working on my Cloisonnism painting technique, I have some final details to do but as it is here it’s mostly finished. I will post the final painting.

Futile Ladders and Cloisonnism

I went to the Glendale Narros Riverwalk with Isabella to find a site to paint. The LA River has trees, herons, blackbirds, pidgeons, and other wildlife. I was looking for something to paint that had great contrast because I wanted to try a new (to me) painting style, Cloisonnism. Cloisonnism is characterised by solid areas of color separated by dark lines. Gauguin’s painting of “Yellow Jesus” is considered a representative painting. The most striking sight was not of nature, but was seen when we passed under the freeway. There was a few feet of light illuminating two ladders, both inadequate to climb the wall they leaned against. Isabella took a picture and I used it as reference for this painting.
