Burbank Art Festival Plein Air Triptych

Burbank Art Festival Plein Air Painting by Oscar Will

This is the painting I did live at the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission booth at the fair. It was a busy day – after I did most of the painting at noon, I returned to my car and took my paintings to the Burbank Art Association ‘booth’ at the mall to sell art. I sold three pieces this weekend. Thank you to all who gave me the opportunity to be there!

The weather is sunny and warm today, between rainy days, so come out and see the Art Festival today in Burbank, California!

The Burbank Art Association has art set up on a panels at the mall dining terrace, including my art. There will be face painting and music all day, too.

Zuma Beach Painting “Walk on the Beach”

Plein air landscape painting of Zuma Beach with bright colors by Oscar Will

The next painting I did at Zuma Beach in California I used more saturated colors. It’s less realistic because it was foggy and grey out there, but I was having fun.

Zuma Beach Plein Air Mono-color

Zuma Beach California Plein Air Landscape painting by Oscar Will

Painted today at Zuma Beach, California with the Weekend Warrior Painters. The fog was thick this morning and everything was grey. The first painting I did is more of a mono-color painting because it really is only grey and yellow.

“Road block” painting Redux

"Road Block" cityscape painting by Oscar Will

This is yet another update of my painting from last year’s Burbank Arts Festival. This version has much brighter colors and more defined shapes, such as I clarified that there is a booth to the left up the street.

“Beautiful Downtown Burbank” Plein Air Painting

Acrylic cityscape impressionism cloisonnism painting by Oscar Will

Yesterday I was in “Beautiful Downtown Burbank” again painting. I’m not sure what exactly draws me to paint these city streets – is it the shapes of the buildings, the colors of the facades, the lines of the road and walkways, or all the above? This was painted in front of the “Urban Press Winery” looking across at the “Tender Greens” store. I have quite a collection of cityscapes, I imagine they would look good hanging in a local restaurant.

River Bed Path

River Bed drawing with pen digitally colored, by Oscar Will

When I do a painting of a place, I get to know it’s intricacies. The angles of the land, colors, shadows, and textures are interpreted from my short term memory and on to the canvas. Sometimes afterward it seems my brain is not satisfied with my output. I have to scrawl it out on the page or be haunted by it like a ghost.

Santa Monica Beach Plein Air Painting

Painting by Oscar Will of Santa Monica beach sun setting

The Santa Monica Beach Pier was very crowded this Sunday – the result of a confluence of events: St. Patrick’s Day, Spring Break, mid 80s Fahrenheit inland, and the first weekend in a while it didn’t rain.

It didn’t stop me from getting in a quick Plein air painting of the beach crowds waiting for the sunset.

Downtown Burbank Palm Avenue Plein Air

Painting of Palm Ave in Burbank California

This view of this painting is from Palm Avenue looking north across San Fernando Boulevard (in Burbank, California.) This part of Palm Avenue is blocked for only pedestrian traffic and houses a movie theater and many restaurants and stores. It was a bright, warm late morning when I started painting and the acrylic paint was drying fast.
