I had some time to spend on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks this weekend, so I packed my paints in my car. I was lucky enough to get a good parking spot on the street and quickly painted the Boulevard from the back of the HHR, with my easel on the street. After 45 minutes or so I had a rough painting:
This view of this painting is from Palm Avenue looking north across San Fernando Boulevard (in Burbank, California.) This part of Palm Avenue is blocked for only pedestrian traffic and houses a movie theater and many restaurants and stores. It was a bright, warm late morning when I started painting and the acrylic paint was drying fast.
I was painting with the Warrior Painters yesterday. After a short hike I did a plein air study of the Observatory sitting on the hills. After raining all week, it was nice to be out in the sunshine. An hour or so later, I wished I hadn’t left my hat in the car.
It was a warm winter day, painting with my daughter today at the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round in Burbank, California.
Saturday I was painting in Pasadena with the Weekend Warrior Painters at the Pacific Asian Museum. I layered a few things to create an interesting composition, the building across the street, a parking pass box, and a few cars.
I did this painting this week en plein air of Los Angels State Historic Park near the Chinatown area of Los Angeles. The light of the day was waning into a yellow wash by the time I was applying the main colors, so I went with it.
The short story of this park is that this stretch of land by railroad tracks was going to be made into a row of warehouses but the community rallied together to show its best use was for a modern park. There are great stretches of green grass, many exhibits, and a lot of modern design with wood and stone.
It was nice to be near the beach and Plein air Painting again. I joined the Weekend Warrior Painters in Venice, California in the Venice Canals. The walkways were narrow and there were a lot of tourists taking pictures on the bridges. A few took pictures of me painting!
I updated this post with the final version.
I made a lot of finishing touches on my painting from the weekend. I tidied up the right side, added a wash to the left side, and finished the glass blocks towards the bottom. A big change was the alcove with the cross over it in the center. In the original, I didn’t have enough room for the cross, so I repainted the whole section. I thought halfway through that I ruined it, but it came out fine, I think.
Evening Plein air painting with the Weekend Warrior Painters at St. Leon Armenian Church in Burbank, CA. Thank you to the pastor for letting our group paint until 8PM. I am still working on my Cloisonnism painting technique, I have some final details to do but as it is here it’s mostly finished. I will post the final painting.
Thank you to the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission! They asked members of the Burbank Art Association to volunteer to do live painting demonstrations at their booth at the Burbank Art Festival April 14 & 15th.
The booth was very colorful. I painted the view up Palm St.
